The Foreign Language Teaching Department was established in 2001 along with the founding of the College of Foreign Studies. The department now has a faculty of 40 teachers, with 2 professors, 14 associate professors, and 24 lecturers. The Department consists of 3 divisions. Division 1 and 2 undertake the English language teaching for undergraduates, while Division 3 postgraduates and foreign languages other than English.

The Department has been innovative in language teaching. English for special purposes is a newly added module, aside with the traditional reading classes, to promote students’ cross-cultural communicative competence. The Department also offers courses of foreign languages, literature and cultures as well as academic English, to postgraduates and doctoral students.

The Department boasts itself of an academically qualified faculty population. Over 80% of the Department's faculty studied in an English speaking country and 90% have a master's degree or a PhD.

In the past five years, the Department completed over 20 research programs and published over 100 research articles. With a focus on foreign language teaching, the department won a dozen provincial teaching awards. More than 10 teachers were among the top 15% in the university’s teachers' assessment.
