From April 8 to April 10, 2016, the 19th ‘FLTRP Cup’ National English Debating Competition Eastern China Finals were successfully held at Nanjing University of Science and Technology. Chen Linshan from the College of Foreign Studies and Ye Yabing from the College of Humanities, selected as representatives of these two colleges, took part in the contest on behalf of Nanjing Agricultural University and won the second prize.
Founded in 1997, the tournament is currently the largest and highest-level spoken English competition in China. Organized by the Central Committee of the school, the National Federation Secretariat, Beijing Foreign Studies University and Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, the competition adopted the internationally accepted British Parliamentary Debate Competition System (BP, British Parliamentary Debate) and consisted of 210 debaters from 105 schools in east China (Jiangsu, Shanghai, Zhejiang, Anhui, Shandong provinces). The competition invited experts and independent judges from different countries, aiming to ensure a fair and equitable outcome of the match.Ultimately, the tournament selected one champion team, one runner-up team, second runner-up teams, twelve first prize teams and sixteen second prize teams.
Both students were members of the NAU English Public Speaking & Debating Team set up by the College of Foreign Studies and ‘EDS English Debate Alliance’. ‘EDS English Debate Alliance’ is a training association for British Parliamentary Debate competition. Through daily training and practice, not only did the participants advance their English proficiency and critical thinking skills, but also cultivated a sense of team spirit. The participation in this competition also demonstrated the progress made in English activities run by the College of Foreign Studies.
