On March6, professor Shin Kokui from the Faculty of Foreign LanguageStudies, Kansai University, visited the College ofForeign Studies (CFS). Professor Shin gave tworefreshing lecturesfor the students and teachers of CFS. You Yiming, vice dean of CFS hosted bothlectures.
Professor Shin’sresearch includes lexicology,languageeducation targeting the nurturing of Chinese and Japanese linguistic competence,the formation of modern lexical items in Chinese andJapanese in light of language contact and lexical exchange. The lecture in themorning titled How to improve the abilityof vocabulary for foreign language learning attracted both undergraduateand graduate students from the Department of Japanese of CFS and all thefaculty of the department. Professor Shin explained the character of modernlexical formation, the Chinese and Japanese language system of vocabulary andChinese-language teaching for foreigners. Shin pointed out that “the ability ofvocabulary” is not just about quantity of vocabulary, but also the ability ofcomprehension and ability to express. Then, he provided different models ofvocabulary in terms of cognitive linguistics.
The lecture in the afternoon entitled Thestudies on modern Chinese character translation was mainly for the faultyand graduate students. Mr. Shin pointed out that translation of words is theproduct of translation in the modern age. Finally, he introduced some ways andsteps to study etymologies.
