At 4 pm on October 25th, Prof. Hilary Nesifrom University of Coventry held a workshop on “What University Students Write And Why” in the teaching building A310, the host of which was Prof. Cao Xinyu, vice-dean of the College of Foreign Studies. All the young teachers of our college participated in the workshop.
First of all, Prof. Nesi put forward her ideas about the current situation of students’ writing: that students have less understanding of the requirements of college writing, and even some students are misunderstood or not instructed about the rules of writing. For these problems, Prof. Nesi pointed out the importance of academic writing in college. Meanwhile, she gave some requirements of academic writing in PTE academic English, TEFELand IELTS. Then, Prof. Nesi asked teachers to present their understandings of academic writing, and she helped teachers realize their misunderstandings and shortcomings in academic writing. At last, Prof. Nesi explained different rules in different Universities of academic writing and introduced the programme of BAWE (British Academic Written English Corpus).
During the whole workshop, Prof. Nesi carefully and patiently answered the questions raised by teachers, who were actively engaged in discussion. Prof. Nesi not only had a sense of humor, but teachers loved her instruction as well. During the workshop, Prof. Nesi also raised some topics for deep discussion. Meanwhile, she resolved doubts and explained by communicating and discussing with other teachers. Everyone at meeting learned a lot.
